さて本日は、芸術家同士の会話をお伝えします。普段芸術家はどんなことを考えているのと知りたい人が居るかどうかわからないけれど。笑
.
昨日は久しぶりにFacebook Messengerから、イタリアに住み、世界中で活躍している彫刻家、東京造形大学時代の先輩に電話しました。
冒頭は、私の怪我の報告。それから、先輩が手間がかからない料理の仕方を教えてくれた。最近ハマっているブロッコリーソースとショートパスタのレシピ、ビーンズスープのレシピ。さすがにイタリアに暮らして何十年も経っている彼はいつもイタリア料理の話をしています。それもとても美味しそうで、私もすぐ試したくなります。
大体先輩と電話するときは、日常的な報告から、こうやって必ず料理の話になる。
その話は楽しかったけれど、…. 私は途中でちょっと遮りながら、” 今日は聞いてもらいたい、芸術と音楽をつなぐ話がある” と切り出しました。
先輩は、” 普段話し合える相手が、あんまりないんだよ” といつも言っている。それは日本語で会話できないと言うフラストレーションもあるだろうけれど、なかなか芸術について語り合える人がいないらしい。だから、この先輩と後輩の、藝術談義はいつも非常に貴重。
ちょっと前置きが長くなりますが、
この部分が1番大事なので先にお伝えします。

◯芸術家が芸術を止めない理由はここにある
“芸術で得られる喜び、喜悦、感動は、何物にも変えがたい。人間の欲望には様々ある。
例えば食欲、睡眠欲、金銭欲、性的な欲求、等々、大きな欲望が叶えられたときの喜びは確かにあるが、芸術で得られる喜びはそれを大いに上回るものだ。それが僕が芸術をやっている理由だな。” と、数年前、杉山先輩は話していた。
私は、それを”確かにその通りだなぁ”と思いながら、自分の場合はどんな体験があっただろう?とその話を聞いたとき、思い巡らしていました。
私が芸術活動通して発見した事は様々ありますが、次に述べることを発見したときの喜びの深さは、それはとても静かで澄み渡るようなもので、” わーい！！なる喜び” とは全く違う。

私の場合はこのようなものだった。
.
絵画は実は描いている人の哲学を表すもの
絵を描く事は哲学をすることと同じ
哲学のない、つまり本当の問いかけのない、制作、作品は全くつまらない。
.
先輩を相手に話していると、
真の芸術家とは何か、健全な藝術制作の姿勢とは、などに立ち戻らせてもらえる。
昨夜は特にこんなことを想像した。科学者や、数学者が新しい何かを数式とか発見したときの喜び、自分の立てた仮説が、間違いないと発見できた時の喜び、それと同じことが今私に起きている、と。
それほど私にとって
“絵画と音楽をつなぐもの”を発見できた事は、何物にも変え難く、大きかった。
怪我をして日中のほとんどをまだベッドの上で過ごさなければいけないのですが
今、むしろ、この怪我をして静かにしていることが、その芸術体験を通して得られる喜びを味わう、そして研究や哲学を深める、最適な状況、になったのです。

“私の中の音楽と絵画をつなぐもの” を太くするために、”天から降りてきたギフト、たった一滴の直感” が、私の心の中で広がり、きちんと言葉化され、そして次に実際の制作にそれが生かせるようになるには、それなりに時間がかかります。
これは芸術家に与えられた悦びの話ですが、あなたにとっては、それはどんなものがあるのか、ぜひ想像しながら読んでください。

◯ 真の芸術家しか持ち得ない集中と聞く力
音楽と絵画をつなぐものについて私が熱弁してる間、先輩は驚くべき集中を持って私の話に耳を傾けてくれた。これ自体に私はとても感動した。
聴くと言う事の本質的な意味を、彼はよくわかっている。そしてもちろん、言葉のニュアンスやディティールに対しても意識が払われていている。この姿勢がやはり彼の素晴らしい作品制作につながるのだと間違いなくそれは言えるだろう。
彼は” 人の話をじっくり聞き、その人が何を言いたいのかよく理解することが、つまるところ自分を知ることになる” とよくわかっているのだ。

◯ 誰かを凄いと思えることがすごい
先輩にこのように伝えた。
“ 私はこのたび、Kristian Zimerman に出会えて、最も自分が知りたかったこと、ここ数年ずっと探していたことが見つかったからすごく嬉しい❣️それと、この人はただならぬ人だ。もちろんもって生まれた才能はあるが、彼が行っている事は努力を超えた努力。
生き様だ！なんて素晴らしい魂だ！
私は自分のこれまでの自分の制作姿勢を反省する。ただ、もちろんサボっていたわけではなくて、見つけられなかった。だからできなかったんだけど。。。これからようやく私の本当の芸術が本編が始まりそうだ。これまではプロローグだったかもしれない。”
このように、感動で熱っぽく喋ってる私に対して、先輩はこのように言った。
“ かおるちゃん、誰かをすごいって思えることが、すごいんだよね。”
先輩のこの一言が、また、でかかった！！
誰かを素晴らしいと思える事は、自分の素晴らしさをその人の中に小さな種を見つけたようなものだから。＾＾

◯ パウル・クレーが伝えたかった事とは
杉山先輩は、私の話を聞きながら、パウル・クレーの話をしだした。
“ パウル・クレーの絵の中には単純な形がよく表れてくるが、でもその小さな一つ一つを見ていくと、単純なだけではなくそこにはものすごい深みがあるんだよね。それはなんでなんだろう？” と。
私はこのように返した。
“ パウル・クレーはもともと音楽家だったよね。彼は、音楽を取るか芸術美術を取るか悩んだ結果、最終的に絵画の道を選んだ。だから彼にとっては、絵画制作は、楽曲の作曲そのものであり、もちろん哲学そのものでしょう？
彼の死後、出版された教育スケッチブック(バウハウスの生徒のために行われたレクチャーをもとに作られた本)、あれを私はずいぶん研究しました。だけどまだまだわからないことだらけだった数年前。
ちょうどその頃描いた絵が最近、帰国しました。一昨年、ブルガリアのトリエンナーレ展に1年間お貸し出し知っていたのですが、でもそれが生焼けのパンみたいに見えて、ww、やり直したんですよ。笑
それはKristian Zimerman の音楽で、意識の変化、目覚めがあったからです。今、私がパウル・クレーが何を言いたかったのかがよくわかる。要するに彼は、絵画の中に、色彩、線、形、モチーフをもって、感情や思考哲学そのものを、エネルギーとして伝えるべく描こうとしていた。
おそらくは細心の注意をもって、その小さなパーツを描く時にも感情や哲学が込められていたはずです。だからそこに単なる単純さはなく、彼の絵画を鑑賞するものに深く心に伝わってくるものがある。
これは私がKristian Zimerman のピアノ音楽を深く集中して聴くことによって、彼が何を行ってるのかを理解できた。
そしてパウルクレーの教育スケッチブックの中で出てくる、捕色と捕色が出会った場所に生まれるグレーのゾーンの事とか、線の扱いによるエネルギーの上昇やグラデーションの意味とか、とてもよくわかるようになりました。
これを、私は一週間前には、まだわからなかったことです。毎日毎日Kristian Zimermanのピアノ音楽に耳を傾けて、次第次第にわかっていたことです。それほど、彼の音楽はナチュラルでありながら、とても完成されています。”

◯ パウル・クレーが出した課題
パウル・クレーの、教育スケッチブックに出てくる、バウハウスの生徒たちに与えた課題を見ると、それはまるで作曲の課題のようです。
“ イントロダクションと全体の雰囲気と、見えてくる世界感と、細かい部分と心の動き、そういうものに注意を払った制作” をするよう、生徒たちに課題を与えていました。
それはまさに、今私がやりたい事です。このように、つくづくにパウル・クレーの絵画と生徒への指導のスタイルは、シンプルでありながらとても音楽制作に通っています。
杉山先輩が、パウル・クレーの話を振ってくれたおかげで、私はより深くパウル・クレーを理解し、今自分が絵画と音楽をつなぐ者に対し、どのくらいの理解を持っているかを確認することができました。
話し相手の意識が高ければ高いほど、このように新しい発見が次々と現れてきます。
いま、生きている先輩とこのように芸術談義ができる事はこの上ない喜びです。

◯ 好みがわかることの重要性
昨日は先輩と作曲家についても結構話をした。そしてその作曲家が持っている作曲のスタイルとか、考え方とか、目指していた世界とかいろいろ。
ショパン、ブラームス、ラフマニノフ、ベートーベン、ハイドン 、シューマン、etc etc
私はやっぱり抜きん出て、ショパンの作曲の構成が好きですね。非常に具体的でありながら、抽象性が突き詰められています。すごいなぁ7歳から作曲始めたショパン、もう本当に天才。。。
しかし楽曲のテーマに置いて、やはりベートーベンのことを研究しないわけにはいかない。それはベートーベンの音楽は私の絵画とテーマが共通しているからです。
大体こういうことで、自分の次なる方向性や自分の好みが明確になりました。
こんな会話の後で、杉山先輩が言った事は、”好みがわかるって本当に大事だよね。それって何か潜在意識にある物だと思うんだよ.”
私は、なるほどと思った。それについてはまた考える時間を持ちたい。

最後に、
◯この芸術家たちの喜び、喜悦の質
それは一体どんなものだろう？
それは私が思うに、それは、
一言で言えば、
“ 人間に与えられた宇宙創造の秘密に触れること” だと思う。
ここで人間は、この宇宙を作った、創造神、最高の存在エネルギー意識のかけらである自分を、よくよく自覚することができるからではないだろうか。
私は、こういった話を芸術家同士の会話に止めたくは無い。それで、ブログにアップすることにしました。
これを読んでいる、一人ひとりの方が今どんなフィールドで生きているのか、生きていきたいと思っているのか、自分が本当に求めているものは何か、自分に与えられた宇宙創造の力はどんなものがあるのか。

Today, I would like to share with you a conversation between artists. I don’t know if anyone would like to know what artists usually think about. LOL.
.
Yesterday, for the first time in a long time, I called from Facebook Messenger my senpai from Tokyo Zokei University, a sculptor who lives in Italy and works all over the world.
The first part of the call was to report my injury. Then, my senior told me how to cook without much effort. A recipe for broccoli sauce and short pasta, which I’ve recently become addicted to, and a recipe for bean soup. As you can imagine, he has been living in Italy for decades and is always talking about Italian food. It also looks very tasty and I want to try it right away.
Generally, when I call my senpai, we always end up talking about food like this, after our daily reports.
I enjoyed talking about it, but …. In the middle of the call, I interrupted him and said, “I have something to tell you today, something that connects art and music.
He always says, “I don’t have a lot of people to talk to. This is partly due to the frustration of not being able to communicate in Japanese, but also because there is no one to talk to about art. That’s why this discussion between seniors and juniors is always very valuable.
It’s a bit long to say, but
This is the most important part, so I’ll tell you first.

◯Here is the reason why artists never stop their art.
“The joy, pleasure, and emotion that comes from art is irreplaceable. There are many desires in human beings.
For example, appetite, desire for sleep, desire for money, desire for sexuality, etc. There is a certain joy when a great desire is fulfilled, but the joy that comes from art is much more than that. That’s why I do art, isn’t it?” Sugiyama-senpai told me a few years ago.
I thought to myself, “Yes, that’s true”, but then I wondered what my own experience had been. I was wondering what my own experience was.
There are many things that I have discovered through my artistic practice, but the depth of joy that I feel when I discover what I am going to describe next is very quiet and clear, very different from the “wow! is very different from the “wow!

This is what it was like for me.
.
Painting is really about the philosophy of the painterTo paint is to philosophise.
Without philosophy, without real questions, the creation, the work is completely boring.
When I talk to my seniors.
I can go back to what is a true artist and what is a healthy attitude for artistic production.
.
Last night, I imagined something like this. The joy that a scientist or a mathematician feels when he discovers something new with a formula, or when he discovers that his hypothesis is correct, the same thing is happening to me now.
That’s how it is for me.
“For me, the discovery of the link between painting and music was irreplaceable and significant.
I still have to spend most of the day in bed because of my injury.
But now, rather than being injured, this quietness has become the perfect situation to savour the joys of the artistic experience and to deepen my research and philosophy.

It takes some time for a “gift from heaven, a drop of intuition” to grow in my mind, to be put into words, and then to be put into practice, in order to thicken the “link between music and painting in me”.
This is the story of the pleasure given to an artist, and I invite you to imagine what it might be like for you.

◯The power of concentration and listening that only a true artist can possess
While I was making an impassioned speech about the link between music and painting, my senior listened to me with remarkable concentration. This in itself was very moving for me.
He understands the essential meaning of listening. And, of course, he is aware of the nuances and details of language. This is what makes his work so good, no doubt about it.
He knows that “listening carefully to people and understanding what they are trying to say is, in the end, the only way to know yourself”.

It’s great to be able to think someone is great
This is what I told my senior colleague.
“I’m so happy that I found Kristian Zimerman, because I found what I wanted to know the most, what I’ve been looking for the last few years❣️And he’s a unique person. Of course he has natural talent, but what he does is beyond hard work. It’s a way of life! What an amazing soul!
I reflect on the way I’ve been working. It’s not that I’ve been slacking off, of course, it’s just that I haven’t found it. That’s why I couldn’t do it…
Now it seems that my real art is about to begin. Maybe this was just a prologue.”
To me, who was talking passionately with emotion, my senior said this.
“Kaoru-chan, being able to think that someone is amazing is amazing.”
This one word from my senpai was also huge!
Because being able to think someone is amazing is like finding a little seed of your own amazingness in that person. …

◯What did Paul Klee want to tell us?
Sugiyama-senpai, while listening to my story, started to talk about Paul Klee.
“In Paul Klee’s paintings, you can often see simple shapes, but even if you look at each of these small shapes, they are not only simple, but there is a tremendous depth to them. I wonder why that is?” I said.
I replied in this way.
“Paul Klee was always a musician, wasn’t he? He had to choose between music and fine art, and finally he chose painting. So for him, the creation of a painting is the composition of a piece of music itself, and of course philosophy itself, isn’t it?
After his death, I studied a lot , his book , the educational sketchbook (a book based on his lectures for Bauhaus students) that was published. But there was still a lot I didn’t understand a few years ago.
A painting I did at that time has recently come back to Japan. The year before last, I had loaned it to the Triennial Exhibition in Bulgaria for a year, but it looked like uncooked bread, so I had to redo it.
It was because of Kristian Zimerman’s music that I had a change of consciousness, an awakening. Now I know exactly what Paul Klee was trying to say. In short, he was trying to convey in his paintings, through colour, line, form and motifs, the energy of feeling and the philosophy of thought itself.
Even when he painted a small part of a painting, he was probably being meticulous, he was putting his feelings and philosophy into it. So there is no mere simplicity in it, but something that is deeply felt by those who appreciate his paintings.
This is what I have been able to understand by listening to Kristian Zimerman’s piano music with deep concentration.
I also came to understand very well the grey zone that appears in Paul Klee’s pedagogical sketchbook, where the catch and the catcher meet, and the meaning of the energy rise and gradation through the treatment of lines. This is something I still didn’t understand a week ago. I have been listening to Kristian Zimerman’s piano music day after day, and gradually I have understood. His music is so natural and yet so complete.”

◯The tasks given by Paul Klee
The tasks that Paul Klee gave his Bauhaus students in his educational sketchbooks are like compositional tasks.
“He asked them to “pay attention to the introduction, to the general atmosphere, to the visible world, to the details, to the movements of the mind.
That’s exactly what I want to do now. As you can see, Paul Klee’s style of painting and teaching is very much like music making in its simplicity.
Thanks to Sugiyama’s talk about Paul Klee, I was able to understand Paul Klee more deeply, and to see how much I now understand the link between painting and music.
The more aware the person you are talking to is, the more new discoveries like this keep appearing.
It is a great pleasure to be able to talk about the arts in this way with a senior person who is alive today.

◯The importance of knowing your taste
Yesterday, I talked a lot about composers with my senior. We talked about the style of composing, the way of thinking, the world that the composer was aiming for, and so on.
Chopin, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Haydn, Schumann, etc etc.
I like Chopin’s compositional structure more than any other. It’s very concrete, but at the same time it’s very abstract. It’s amazing that Chopin started composing at the age of seven, he’s a genius.
But in terms of the theme of the piece, I can’t help but study Beethoven. This is because Beethoven’s music shares a common theme with my paintings.
In general, this is how I have been able to clarify my next direction and my tastes.
After this conversation, Sugiyama said to me: “It’s really important to know what you like. I think it’s something subconscious.”
I thought to myself, “I see. I would like to have some time to think about it.

Finally.
◯What is the quality of joy and pleasure of these artists?
What is it like?
In my opinion, it is .
In a word.
“I think it is, in a word, to touch the secret of the creation of the universe given to man.
I think it is because here man can become well aware of himself as a fragment of the Creator God, the Supreme Being Energy Consciousness, who created this universe.
I don’t want to stop this kind of conversation between artists. So I decided to post it on my blog.
I would like each and every one of you reading this to discover what field you are living in, what you want to live in, what you are really looking for, and what cosmic creative power you have been given.
